COMMENTS:
Pretty neat day. We shove off around 6:45 to get to the train depot in Williams, AZ by 7:30 to catch our train scheduled to leave at 9:00. Why they said to be there that early became clearly obvious when you saw the gifty stores, restaurant, etc.The Grand Canyon Railway is a really cool setup. It was built by the Santa Fe railroad in the early 1900's and ran until the 60's when it was abandoned. It was then purchased by a fella in the 80's, rehabilitated, and opened for rides to the Grand Canyon. They have various styles of passenger cars in which to ride. In addition to diesel locomotives, they have a refurbished Mikado steam engine which is OK.
The ride is about 68 miles and takes 2-1/4 hours through desert, forests and hills. Each coach has an attendant who keeps you informed as to what to look out for and amused. Ours name was Jodi, she was very good and kept everyone entertained. On the return trip we were attacked by a band of desperados who robbed the train. I explained that I was a broke no good hobo riding the rails lookin' for work but, that my pardner, Connie, sittin' right here, had plenty of jewelry. They appreciated the good tip and left me alone. Remember, survival of the rottenest. You can see Connie became their best buddy.
The Grand Canyon is one hell of a hole in the ground and beautiful. But, has everyone seen Chevy Chase in National Lampoon Vacation? Hmmm, well for me that pretty much sums it up. Quite a site but, after an hour, next! If I had planned to hike that would have been different but I would certainly plan that trip in the Spring or Fall when the temperatures are under 500o. The salvation were the ever-present gifty stores.
Tomorrow, Viva Las Vegas!
